We have seen a big increase in people seeking medical
attention for seasonal influenza this year. Figures released by the NHS show that there
has been a 64% increase in flu cases compared with the same period last year.
We recommend that patients in high risk groups like the elderly,
people with compromised immune systems and those with respiratory conditions
such as asthma, get the seasonal flu vaccination from their GP. We are prepared
to prescribe antivirals such as Relenza or Tamiflu for people who wish to have
these medications on hand should they develop flu. Both Tamiflu and Relenza should lessen
symptoms and shorten the duration of flu. They can also be used as a preventative
measure if you have come into close contact with someone who has flu and this
should ensure that symptoms do not develop if the treatment is taken in time.
For most patients who develop flu, the best advice is to
stay at home and drink plenty of fluids. Medications such as paracetamol can be
taken to bring relief from symptoms of fever, aching muscles and headaches. If
symptoms become more severe then you should seek medical attention. Do not take
antibiotics for influenza as it is a viral infection and will not respond to
antibiotics. We will only prescribe antibiotics in cases of influenza if it is
suspected that patients have developed a secondary infection.
