What is Zineryt?

Zineryt contains an antibiotic called erythromycin that reduces the inflammation caused by acne. The skin eruptions and redness caused by acne are due to the effects of increasing numbers of bacteria in the skin follicles. Erythromycin stops these bacteria from producing the proteins that allow them to multiply and regenerate. By reducing the number of bacteria present in the skin follicles it reduces the redness that accompanies acne. It also reduces the abnormal amounts of sebum that cause the eruptions. Sebum is a normal substance secreted by glands in the skin that keeps the skin moist and flexible.

Zineryt also contains zinc acetate. By itself, zinc has a skin restoring effect that promotes healing. The role of zinc in this product is to enable the antibiotic to penetrate into the deep layers of the skin and reach the source of the problem.

How to use Zineryt?

Zineryt is supplied in a bottle which has an applicator pad. Before using Zineryt you should wash the affected area. The first time you use the product you will need to unscrew the protective cap from the bottle. You then simply hold the bottle upside down, place the pad against the area you are treating and apply the contents using a spreading action. It is a good idea to apply the solution to the normal skin that surrounds the affected areas as well. If necessary, you can increase the flow of solution by pressing the pad a little more firmly. Any excess solution can be removed using a tissue. Be careful not to get any of the solution into your eyes, nose or mouth. If that does happen, rinse the affected area well with cold or lukewarm water. Make up can be applied after the medicine has dried.

Zineryt should be applied to the affected areas twice a day. The normal length of treatment is 10 to 12 weeks. But in some people acne can take several months to heal.

Who can use Zineryt?

If you complete a consultation form we can tell you if Zineryt is appropriate for you. As this medicine is applied locally you can use it if you are pregnant. It is also acceptable to use Zineryt if you are breastfeeding provided you do not apply it to the chest area. You will not be able to use Zineryt if you have a known allergy to erythromycin or other similar types of antibiotics. You will also be prescribed another form of treatment if you are allergic to zinc or to any of the other constituents of the solution. We will be able to advise you about this once we have your completed consultation form.

Zineryt side effects

Very few people experience any problems with Zineryt. However, it is possible that you may experience temporary stinging, itching or slight redness of the skin. You should stop using Zineryt if you get a painful rash or burning sensation that does not go away after a few hours, or if the skin redness gets worse each time you use Zineryt. If this happens please tell us as soon as possible if it was this clinic that prescribed for you.
