How does Metronidazole work?

Anaerobic bacteria cause infections because they do not need oxygen to grow and multiply, but the antibiotic kills them in the body. It is thought to enter the bacterial cell and act on components in the cell, killing the bacteria.

How is Metronidazole taken?

For Bacterial Vaginosis, the normal course of treatment is a 400mg Metronidazole tablet taken twice a day for seven days. You might also be prescribed a single dose of 2 grams, but this can be less effective and causes more side effects.

We will normally prescribe a five day course of Metronidazole for dental infections, with 400 mg being taken three times per day.

It is recommended that Metronidazole be taken with or immediately after food. People taking Metronidazole should not drink any alcohol at all during the course of treatment, as this will make them feel nauseous in the extreme.

Metronidazole and Sexually Transmitted Infections

Metronidazole is used to treat Bacterial Vaginosis and Trichomonas Vaginalis.

You can get tested for Bacterial Vaginosis and Trichomonas Vaginalis by post using a reputable online service from The STI Clinic.

Who can use Metronidazole?

Most people can use Metronidazole but it is not suitable if you have liver disease, a stomach or intestinal disorder like Crohn's, epilepsy or a nervous system disorder. It is also not suitable if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Metronidazole can interact with a number of medications so it is important that you mention any medications that you are taking to your doctor.

We do not prescribe antibiotics to pregnant or breast-feeding women, as this must be done in a face-to-face environment so that risk can be assessed. Metronidazole is contraindicated in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy in any case.

Side effects associated with Metronidazole

As with any prescription medication, Metronidazole can cause side effects in some people. These are usually mild. The most common are nausea, dry mouth, myalgia and metallic taste. Some people also experience headaches, dizziness or diarrhoea. Vaginal use can cause vaginal discharge, bleeding or pelvic discomfort.

Very rarely people have experienced pain or burning when urinating, white patches or sores on the inside of the mouth, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, fever and flu-like symptoms and seizures. In this case, you should call your doctor.

If you experience difficulty breathing or swelling of your face, tongue or throat call your doctor or visit your nearest emergency room immediately.

I don't know what I would have done without the online clinic giving me a prescription to treat a mouth abscess. I was in excruciating pain and my dentist was unable to see me until 13/09/20. My prescription arrived as promised the nest day and within two days I was pain free. I would not hesitate to use this service again and will be sure to recommend yourselves to all my family and friends. A very heartfelt thank you

These antibiotics seem to work well with no personal side effects. They have definitely reduced the swelling and pain of suspected abcess. I feel 5 day course isn't sufficient as the problem hasn't completely gone and maybe a longer course of a few extra days is needed.

I cannot thank enough the timely help and meds that I received so quickly and promptly by the online clinic than my regular dental surgery who no matter what dread to prescribe antibiotics after seeing the situation it’s a shame that medical systems are such a let down for working people who haven’t got time to fall ill . I wish this sort of help is available with our regular dentist rather than left in agony and an excruciating pain for weeks . I will be back for help again as I feel helped and looked after here more than my own doctors. Su...
