What is Levitra orodispersible?

Levitra ODT contains vardenafil that is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It is a dissolvable tablet that is rapidly absorbed into the blood from the mouth, and therefore has the benefit of speed of action and convenience for those who have difficulty in swallowing.

Levitra ODT works indirectly on the penis by increasing the concentration of a chemical that is normally present in the body called nitric oxide. During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide acts on the blood vessels in a man's penis causing them to relax. This allows blood to flow into the penis, thereby causing it to expand and prevent blood from flowing out of the penis. The increase in blood volume in the penis results in an erection.

How to use Levitra orodispersible tablets

Your doctor will explain exactly how you should take Levitra ODT. The orodispersible form of Levitra is available as 10 mg tablets only. This is the usual and most appropriate dose for the majority of men. Levitra ODT is taken about 25 to 60 minutes before having sex. If you are sexually stimulated, erections may be achieved from 25 minutes up to four to five hours after taking the medicine. See your doctor if Levitra ODT does not help you to have an erection or satisfactory sexual intercourse, as your prescription can be changed to suit your needs. Likewise, if you think the dose is too strong, see your doctor. Never take more tablets than what has been recommended or take other erectile dysfunction treatments, as well as Levitra ODT. Inform your doctor immediately if you do this.

Gently remove the tablet from the blister pack only when you are going to take it. Levitra ODT is taken whole by placing on the tongue. The tablet will quickly dissolve when it can then be swallowed with saliva. Levitra ODT can be taken before or after food but not with a glass of water or any other liquid. It is advisable not to drink grapefruit juice when using Levitra ODT as it can alter the medicine's effectiveness, nor alcohol as it can worsen erection difficulties.

Who can use Levitra orodispersible tablets?

Levitra ODT is for adult men (18 years or older) with erectile dysfunction. It is designed to work only when a man is sexually stimulated. Levitra ODT is not suitable for women, adolescents or children.

This medicine should not be taken by men who are allergic (or intolerant) to the active ingredient, vardenafil, or to any of the other constituents of the ODT preparation (e.g. phenylalanine and sorbitol). Levitra ODT can affect your blood pressure and therefore you should tell your doctor if you are taking any medicines containing nitrates, such as those for chest pain (angina). Your doctor will particularly want to know if you are taking medicines to treat HIV (ritonavir or indinavir) or antifungal medicines (especially if you are older than 75 years). Medicines for arrhythmias, as well as alpha blockers (for high blood pressure and prostate enlargement) and antibiotics should also be mentioned.

Taking Levitra ODT warrants special care if you have heart or liver problems, low blood pressure, recently had a stroke or heart attack, or are having kidney dialysis; additionally, experiencing loss of vision due to non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) or degenerative eye diseases in your family (retinitis pigmentosa) are a cause for concern. Also take special care if you have alterations to the look of your penis (such as Peyronie's disease or cavernosal fibrosis), experience prolonged painful erections (due to sickle cell disease, leukaemia, or bone marrow cancer), or have stomach ulcers or bleeding problems.

Side effects of Levitra orodispersible tablets

Side effects of Levitra ODT are mostly mild to moderate and not long term. Regardless, if you are worried about any adverse effect or a side effect becomes serious, talk to your doctor. Most common is headache, while dizziness, flushing, indigestion, and a blocked or runny nose are also common. Although uncommon, Levitra ODT can have various effects on vision and the heart, and cause stomach upsets, muscle pain and prolonged/painful erections. However, loss of vision (temporary and permanent, in one or both eyes) and hearing (of varying extent) have been experienced by men taking Levitra ODT, and should be reported to a doctor immediately.
