What is Mirvaso?

Brimonidine, which belongs to the class of medicines known as alpha agonists, is the active compound in Mirvaso. Individuals with rosacea experience periodic episodes of flushing and redness of the face, particularly on the nose and cheeks. This is caused by widening of the small blood vessels in the skin of the face, which allows more blood to flow into the area. Mirvaso acts on these blood vessels, causing them to constrict. This, in turn, has the effect of decreasing the blood flow to the skin, thus reducing the redness.

How to use Mirvaso

Follow your doctor's instructions for using this medicine and when to stop it. Mirvaso is a gel that is for use on the skin of the face only. Do not apply it to your eyelids, lips, in your nose, or on any other body skin area. Apply a pea-sized quantity of gel to your chin, nose, forehead, and cheeks, spreading it thinly and evenly over the skin. Then wash your hands. Avoid using all others skin medicines and products on these areas of skin before applying Mirvaso; you can use them afterwards when the Mirvaso gel has dried. Mirvaso is used once a day only. It works on each daily application, so the redness of your skin will not be reduced on any day that you forget to apply it. Never use two doses to compensate for missing a dose, nor use more than that recommended or you may experience side effects. Seek medical advice if you swallow the gel.

Who can use Mirvaso?

Mirvaso can be used by adults 18 years of age or older only. You must not use this medicine if you are allergic to any of the gel's constituents. You will need medical advice if you have face irritation or open sores, problems with your heart, circulation, kidneys or liver, or Sjögren's syndrome. A doctor's advice is also warranted if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or trying/planning to have a baby.

Your doctor needs to know if you are taking medicines that work on the same mechanism in the body as Mirvaso (the so-called alpha agonists and alpha antagonists). You should inform your doctor if you are taking any medicines for depression or Parkinson's disease, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (e.g. moclobemide or selegiline), tricyclic antidepressants (e.g. imipramine) or tetracyclic antidepressants (e.g. mirtazapine, maprotiline, or mianserin), because the combination could cause your blood pressure to fall. Additionally, let your doctor know if you take medicines for the treatment of pain, sleep disorders, psychiatric disorders (including anxiety and hyperactivity disorders), high blood pressure, or heart problems, or regularly drink alcohol.

Mirvaso Side Effects

An allergy or severe skin irritation may develop, or rosacea may worsen, when using Mirvaso; stop using the gel and contact your doctor should this happen. Often, redness, flushing, itching, and a burning sensation can occur. Effects on the skin reported less frequently include rash, inflammation, discomfort, dryness, acne, and sensations of warmth or tingling or ‘pins and needles’. Also uncommon are headache, swelling of the eyelids, blocked nose, dry mouth, and feeling hot overall or cold in your hands and feet.
