What is Flixotide (fluticasone)?

Fluticasone propionate is a potent corticosteroid and is marketed as Flixotide, an oral inhalant used to treat asthma.

Fluticasone is available in powder, liquid and nebule form and is delivered via four different types of inhaler devices; a chlorofluorocarbon-free metered dose inhaler (Flixotide Evohaler), breath-activated accuhaler (Flixotide Accuhaler) and diskhaler (Flixotide Diskhaler), and through a nebuliser which converts the liquid form into inhalable nebules (Flixotide Nebules).

Fluticasone is also available under the brand names Flovent, Flonase and Flixonase.

How does Flixotide (fluticasone) work?

Fluticasone works by reducing the inflammation caused by asthma in your airways and lungs. Specifically, fluticasone acts by blocking the inflammatory substances released by the immune system that cause inflammation.

How is Flixotide (fluticasone) used to treat asthma?

Fluticasone is delivered via an inhaler which allows it to be absorbed directly into the inner linings of your airways and lungs. This helps to alleviate your symptoms of asthma such as excess mucus and shortness of breath, and stops asthma attacks from happening.

What else is Flixotide (fluticasone) used to treat?

Fluticasone is also available as a topical cream, ointment and lotion to treat various inflammatory skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis and rash.

Are there any side effects of Flixotide (fluticasone)?

The most common side-effects you might experience are oral thrush and sore throat, both of which you can prevent by washing your mouth out after inhaling a dose. Other less common side effects include hoarseness, joint pain and indigestion.

Can anyone use Flixotide (fluticasone)?

You should use fluticasone with caution if you are or have suffered from tuberculosis, or diabetes. You should not use fluticasone if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. You can get your Flixotide inhaler online after completing a short consultation form.
