EllaOne - How it works

EllaOne blocks a receptor that normally attaches to progesterone; this action prevents ovulation. Where ovulation has already occurred, EllaOne causes the environment in the womb to become less receptive to an egg and thereby prevents a pregnancy.

Is EllaOne effective?

EllaOne is effective and you can take it up to 5 days after intercourse has taken place so it can be more convenient than Levonelle, which can be taken up to 72 hours after intercourse. You should be aware that no emergency contraceptive is 100% effective.

EllaOne can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives so if you are using the pill, you should use barrier contraception until you have your next period.

EllaOne Side Effects

All medications have potential side effects but most people do not get side effects with EllaOne. For those who do get side effects, here are the most common:

  • Back ache
  • Nausea
  • Muscle Pain
  • Headache
  • Abdominal Pain

If you vomit within 3 hours of taking EllaOne then there is a high likelihood that it has not worked and you will require another pill.

Is EllaOne right for me?

Please complete a consultation form and one of our doctors will decide if the medication is appropriate for you. You cannot take EllaOne if you are taking St John's Wort and if you have severe asthma then you will be advised not to take this medication. Please make a full disclosure on our consultation form so that we can make sure that this treatment is the right one as there is an alternative that might be more appropriate in your circumstances. Where both are appropriate, we will give you the choice.

How soon can I get EllaOne?

The Online Clinic can prescribe EllaOne for same day collection in a pharmacy of your choice. If you cannot get to a pharmacy for whatever reason, the doctor may consider a prescription for the medication to be delivered by overnight courier so long as this will be appropriate in your circumstances. Collecting from a pharmacy on the same day will always be our primary recommendation.
