What is Clobetasol Proprionate/Neomycin Sulphate/Nystatin?

Clobetasol propionate/Neomycin sulphate/Nystatin is a combination medicine containing the three active ingredients - clobetasol propionate, neomycin sulphate, and nystatin.

Clobetasol propionate is a corticosteroid medicine. It is used to reduce inflammation that occurs in skin conditions such as such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. The corticosteroid works by blocking the release of substances from skin cells, which lead to the characteristic redness, swelling, irritation and pain of inflamed skin. As clobetasol propionate is a strong corticosteroid, it is used only in severe cases that either did not respond or did not respond sufficiently to weaker corticosteroids.

Both neomycin sulphate and nystatin treat the infection. Neomycin sulphate is an antibiotic treatment that works on bacteria infecting the inflammatory skin condition. It does this by interfering with bacterial protein production, which enables bacteria to survive. Nystatin is an antifungal treatment that works on fungi and yeasts. By causing damage to their cell membranes, it kills these organisms.

How to use Clobetasol Proprionate/Neomycin Sulphate/Nystatin

Clobetasol propionate/Neomycin sulphate/Nystatin is a cream. Rub a thin layer of cream into the affected skin areas. This is usually done once or twice a day but as this is a potent medicine it must be used in the way your doctor has stated. Ensure your hands are washed before use and again after use if your hands do not require treatment.

The cream is usually used for seven days. However, it should be used for five days only in children or if it is used on the face. Do not stop applying the cream until the end of the course unless you have been told to by your doctor or you have problems. If your skin condition is either not improved or worsened consult your doctor. You may have to use this medicine for longer but do not use it for more than four weeks without the doctor seeing the treated areas of skin. Long-term use can lead to problems, render the medicine ineffective or you may become allergic to it.

Special care should be taken on sore broken skin, large areas or under folds of skin, or under dressings because this increases the absorption of the medicine. If you are using another treatment on the affected area, then leave 30 minutes between applications to allow the medicine that you use first to be absorbed. If you forget to apply the cream, then wait for the next application time. If you have regularly applied too much then contact you doctor for advice.

Who can use Clobetasol Proprionate/Neomycin Sulphate/Nystatin?

Clobetasol propionate/Neomycin sulphate/Nystatin is for use in adults. With special care it may be prescribed for infants, children and older people.

The cream should not be used if you are allergic to clobetasol propionate, neomycin sulphate, nystatin or any of the other constituents of the cream. It should also not be used in cases where the skin condition is primarily caused by a bacterial (e.g. impetigo), fungal or yeast (e.g. ringworm or candida), or viral (e.g. herpes or chickenpox) infection.

Clobetasol propionate/Neomycin sulphate/Nystatin is not recommended for use if you are pregnant or breast feeding because, although not certain, it could affect the baby. Let your doctor know if this applies to you. Inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines that you are or have recently used. Ensure you detail any muscle relaxant medicines that you are taking as they may interact with the cream's active ingredients.

Clobetasol Proprionate/Neomycin Sulphate/Nystatin Side Effects

Skin rash, irritation, redness, hives, a burning feeling or dermatitis may mean that you have become allergic to Clobetasol propionate/Neomycin sulphate/Nystatin - stop using the cream and get medical advice. If the cream worsens the skin problem that you are being treated for, then contact your doctor.

Eye and vision may be affected if the cream gets in the eye. It can also hide the symptoms of infection. Usually when used for a long time, the cream may result in skin thinning, visible blood vessels, and stretch marks. Skin may change colour or have increased hair growth. Clobetasol propionate/Neomycin sulphate/Nystatin may cause Cushing-like symptoms (facial puffiness and roundedness of the face) due to problems with your adrenal glands, kidney problems, and ear damage.
