Prontoderm

Prontoderm is used for the treatment of bacterial infections on the skin and inside the nose.

What is Prontoderm?

Prontoderm is an antibacterial agent. It contains an active ingredient called polyaminopropyl biguanide.

Prontoderm cleans, removes bacterial colonies, and moisturises the skin and inside the nose. Essentially, Prontoderm is used to remove bacterial plaques living on the skin's surface and inside the nose, particularly those plaques of organisms that are resistant to treatment with multiple antibiotic medicines. This means that certain antibiotics are ineffective for treating these infections. Such bacteria include methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), and the extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) Enterobacterales that are resistant to commonly used antibiotics (e.g., penicillin and cephalosporin).

How to use Prontoderm

Prontoderm is available in several forms, including a foam, three gels (gel, gel-X, and nose gel), a solution, and as wipes. The product is colourless and ready to use. There is no need to prepare of the skin or the bacterial plaque before using the product. Only the nasal gel is available via The Online Clinic.

The Foam is a water-based preparation for cleaning the whole body, and that does not require rinsing from the body. It removes bacterial colonies and forms a barrier to prevent the bacteria from recolonising by inhibiting their multiplication, spread, and transmission.

Similar to the Foam, the Solution is also for cleaning the whole body. It is advisable to clean each body part, using a separate cleaning wipe soaked in the solution.

The Gel is for cleaning and moisturising plaques and first- and second-degree burns, including those that have become infected. The Gel is applied generously to the affected skin area, covering any cavities and breaks in the skin. It stops a film of bacteria forming on the skin and removes this covering if present in the plaque. Bandages used to cover plaques can be applied, with the Gel forming an effective barrier and reducing the entry of bacteria through the bandages. Gel X is for cleaning, hydrating, and decontaminating chronic surface or deep wounds caused by, heat, chemicals, and radiation, including those that have become infected. As with the Gel, Gel X stops the bacterial film forming on the skin and removes it if present in the plaque. Gel X can be used with plaque patches, stays on the plaque until a patch change, and keeps the plaque surface moist. Using the Solution before treating the skin with the Gel or Gel X provides the best results. The Nasal Gel is used to remove bacterial colonies, clean and prevent recolonisation of the entrance to the nose, the ear canal leading from the outside of the ear to the eardrum, nasal sinuses, and the whole body. Gels should be not used beyond 8 weeks after opening the container.

The Wipes made from paper and soaked in the Solution. These too are to clean the whole body and to remove colonies of bacteria and prevent them reforming. They can be used before surgery and warmed in a microwave oven. After use, the skin does not need wiping or rinsing.

Your doctor will tell you which preparation of Prontoderm to use, as well as when to, how to, and how long to use it. Usually, the Foam, Solution, Gel, Gel X, and Wipes are applied once a day for five consecutive days, and the Nasal Gel is applied twice a day for five consecutive days.

Who can use Prontoderm?

Anyone wishing to use Prontoderm on themselves or their children should first check its suitability for use with their doctor. Women should consult their doctor about whether to use Prontoderm if they are pregnant, may be pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Prontoderm is suitable for people with a sensitive skin that easily becomes irritated. The product contains substances with low allergenic potential. However, it should not be used if you have an allergic reaction to polyaminopropyl biguanide or any of the product's ingredients.

Notify your doctor about all your other medicines, including those taken currently, recently, and in the future.
