Trimethoprim Side Effects

Like any medication, Trimethoprim can have side effects. These are generally mild and improve as your body adjusts to the medication. Less than 1 in 10 people taking this medication will experience the most common side effects. These include:

  • Feeling sick or vomiting
  • An itchy, mild skin rash
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight

If you do experience these side effects, there are certain measures that you can take to reduce them. If you are nauseous, eat little and often and try to avoid rich foods. If you develop a skin rash, apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser and avoid scrubbing your skin. You should also apply a sunscreen, avoid bright sunlight and not use sun beds while taking Trimethoprim.

If you develop:

  • An allergic reaction (such as swelling of the mouth or face)
  • A severe skin rash with blisters
  • A high temperature with sore throat, mouth ulcers or unusual bruising/bleeding
  • Headache, stiff neck, tiredness and an increased sensitivity to bright light

speak to your doctor immediately or go to your local Accident and Emergency department.

Trimethoprim Contraindications

Trimethoprim is not suitable for everyone and it should be used with special caution in some cases. Trimethoprim is not suitable during pregnancy or by those who have a blood disorder or severe kidney disease. You should also make sure your doctor is aware if you are taking antibiotics or any other medications as there could be an interaction that causes you harm.
