What is Condyline?

Condyline is a topical gel that is used to treat external genital warts on the skin of the vagina and penis, as well as between the anus and genitals. It is available with a doctor's prescription and was the first topical medication to be approved for use in treating genital warts.

What is Warticon?

Warticon is a cream version of Condyline and contains the same active ingredient (podophyllotoxin.)

How do Warticon and Condyline work?

The active ingredient in Condyline and Warticon is podophyllotoxin. When applied directly to the wart, it penetrates the tissue and then has a toxic effect on the nucleus of the wart cells. They are prevented from multiplying and eventually the wart cells die and healthy cells grow back.

How are Condyline and Warticon used?

These medications are used as a topical gel or cream, which is applied directly to the warts. It is applied in a thin film over the affected area. It is normally used twice daily for three consecutive days. If the warts are persistent then the course of treatment may be repeated once a week for 4 weeks.

Who should use Warticon and Condyline?

Warticon and Condyline should not be used if someone is allergic to any of the ingredients or used on children. It is not established whether if taken by pregnant women it can be damaging to the unborn child, so expectant mothers should ask their doctor for advice about treatment.

It is also not suitable for use internally and warts larger than 4 cm in diameter are better treated under direct medical supervision so Warticon or Condyline may not be appropriate in these cases.

Side effects of Warticon and Condyline

The main side effect associated with this medication is skin irritation around the area of application. This is normally mild and noticed on the second or third day of treatment. It can also cause smarting, itching or redness in the area of application.

If you feel that you are suffering from genital warts then Warticon or Condyline may be appropriate for you. There is also a medication called Aldara that may also be appropriate. Please complete a free consultation form that will be reviewed by one of our doctors. If any of these medications are appropriate then we will be happy to prescribe one of them for you.
