Propecia Information

Propecia is a prescription medication which contains Finasteride as its active ingredient. Finasteride is a Type II 5 alpha reductase inhibitor which appears to stem the production of dihydratestosterone (DHT) which, when present in the scalp, can attack and shrink hair follicles, eventually making these follicles incapable of supporting the growth of hairs. Ultimately, this attack by DHT leads to male pattern baldness. The intervention with Propecia can halt hair loss and, in some cases, lead to a re-growth of hair.

The Online Clinic offers free consultations for male pattern baldness and we will prescribe Propecia if it is appropriate for you as an individual.

It is not permissible to publish price lists for prescription medications but we are confident that the prices that we offer will not be matched by any other legitimate provider of Propecia in the UK. The full price list is available immediately on approval by one of our doctors. If you see a better price offered by any UK based website offering an identical service, we will be happy to at least match that price. It is not possible to offer a price match based on an offer from a website that is not UK based and is not dispensing from a UK registered pharmacy as we have no way of determining whether or not they are providing authentic treatments.

What is Propecia?

Propecia is only prescribed if you have male pattern hair loss (also known as androgenetic alopecia). Propecia increases hair growth on the scalp and prevents further hair loss in men. Propecia is really designed for people with mild to moderate hair loss. If you are completely bald, do not use Propecia as you will not derive any benefit.

Propecia is for use in men only. Do not allow women to come into contact with Propecia as a broken tablet can be absorbed through the skin and can cause harm to a foetus if she is pregnant.

How Propecia Works

Propecia inhibits the enzyme known as Type II 5α-reductase, which is involved in the regulation hair follicles.

Scalp Hair Growth Pattern

Hair grows from hair follicles, which are located beneath the skin. On average, hair will grow about 1 centimetre each month. Some people will clearly experience a faster or slower hair growth depending on their own physical make up. Do not assume that there is something wrong with you if your hair growth is faster than the average stated here.

A single scalp hair grows continuously for up to 4 years – this is known as the growth phase. The hair stops growing for around 2 to 4 months – this is known as the rest phase. The hair then falls out. In its place a new healthy hair begins to grow and the cycle is repeated. Many people contact us because they are worried about seeing hairs in the shower when they wash their hair; this is completely normal as the hairs on your scalp are always at different stages of the hair cycle. Everyone loses some hairs every day; the volume of shedding will depend to a large extent on your hair density.

Male Pattern Hair Loss

Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of the hair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding around the crown and sometimes meeting in the middle to form a horseshoe shape. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and a particular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).

DHT contributes to shortening of the growth phase and thinning of the hair. This process leads to male pattern hair loss. Once hair loss has occurred over a long period of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

How Propecia Works

Finasteride, the active ingredient in Propecia, specifically lowers the levels of DHT in the scalp. Propecia helps to reverse the balding process, leading to an increased hair growth and hair count per square inch. Propecia also helps to prevent further hair loss.

For Whom is Propecia Suitable?

Women must not use Propecia under any circumstances, due to the risk in pregnancy.

Do not take Propecia if you think you are allergic to any of its ingredients or if you are already taking finasteride or any other 5α-reductase inhibitor. These drugs are also used to treat a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia.

How to take Propecia

Take one tablet of Propecia every day, with or without food.

Propecia will not work faster or better if you take it more than once a day. You should only take one tablet of Propecia each day. Do not exceed the stated dose.

When Will I See Results?

Male pattern hair loss is a condition that develops over a long period of time. In general, daily use of Propecia for three to six months is necessary before you are likely to notice any increase in the hair density or reduction in hair loss. If you have not noticed any difference in your hair loss progression after 9 months of continuous use, please discuss this with your prescribing doctor as it may not be advisable to continue taking Propecia.

Continued use of Propecia is recommended to obtain maximum benefit. If you stop taking Propecia, you are likely to lose the hair you have gained. The hair loss that you experience following a cessation of Propecia will normally take place within 9 months of stopping the medication.

Side Effects

Like any medicine, Propecia may have unintended or unwanted effects. These are uncommon and do not affect most men.

A small number of men may experience less desire to have sex. An even smaller number experience erectile dysfunction. In clinical studies, these side effects disappeared in men who stopped taking Propecia and in many men who continued treatment. The following allergic reaction side effects have been reported infrequently:

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Hives
  • Swelling of the lips and face
  • Breast tenderness and enlargement
  • Pain in the testes

If you get any of these unusual symptoms, tell us immediately as it may be necessary for you to stop take Propecia.

Propecia is a hair loss pill which contains Finasteride. Propecia comes in 1 mg doses. Do not take more than 1 mg of Propecia a day as an increased dose will not have any greater effect on hair loss stabilisation or re-growth. Do not split Propecia tablets as this will break the protective coating and damage the integrity of the active ingredient.
