What is Elocon?

Elocon is a corticosteroid medicine, which is classified as ‘potent’. This anti-inflammatory agent contains the active chemical mometasone furoate 0.1% w/w. Elocon is used to reduce the redness and the alleviate itchiness of the skin caused by the inflammation experienced by individuals with atopic dermatitis or the dry, scaly patches of psoriasis. Elocon enters the skin cells and acts by inhibiting the molecules associated with inflammation.

How to use Elocon

Elocon is a topical ointment or cream applied to the skin. Once every day, a thin coating of ointment is carefully rubbed into area of affected skin. Avoid skin around the eyes and eye-lids. Do not use large amounts on extensive body areas, especially over a long time. Use the ointment for as long as your doctor has told you to. If this has been a long time, do not stop using Elocon until you have taken advice from your doctor on how to stop, because the problem may return.

Adults and children must not use Elocon on the face for over 5 days, and children must not use it anywhere else on the body for over 5 days. Areas of treated skin should generally not be covered with a dressing. Never cover treated facial skin or use under a nappy. Covering the area causes the active ingredient to be absorbed more quickly, potentially causing undesirable effects.

Inform your doctor if you have not used Elocon as directed, such as applying too much, too frequently or for too long. Accidentally swallowing the ointment does not usually cause problems. Continue to apply the ointment at the scheduled time if you have forgotten a treatment dose.

Who can use Elocon?

Adults and children older than 2 years can use Elecon.

Do not use Elocon if you are allergic to mometasone furoate or the ointment’s other ingredients (the ingredient propylene glycol can cause itchy skin). You should avoid use of Elocon if you also have other skin problems (including acne, rosacea, warts, wounds, and thin or ulcerated skin) or skin infections, as your symptoms may worsen. Cold sores, chickenpox and shingles, as well as dermatitis surrounding the mouth, nappy rash and genital itching, also prohibit Ecolon use.

Before taking Ecolon, inform you doctor of all your current, recent, and potential future medicines, and also your situation with regard to planned pregnancy, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

Elocon side effects

The doctor must be contacted immediately if your vision becomes blurred or there are other disturbances in vision. Similarly, let your doctor know if there is any worsening of psoriasis; raised, pus-filled bumps appear; or you develop a skin infection. Stop using the ointment and contact the doctor if you experience sensitive or irritated skin.

Side effects include allergic skin reactions and skin infections. Tingling, itching, burning and stinging may occur at the treated site. The skin may become thin, soft, lose colour, or show stretch marks. Also, the area of skin may develop a prickly heat red rash, acne, hair follicle infection or inflammation, or excessive hair growth.

Using more Elocon than recommended or for too long can cause alterations in the hormone levels of treated individuals, particularly children. This may result in a round or puffy face. Adults may also become fatigued, tired, and dizzy when standing/sitting, while growth and development may be delayed in children.
