We are always on the lookout for new treatments or products
that will help our patients. One of the many innovations that have come to our attention
recently is a new medical device that was presented to the European Society for Sexual
Medicine. The device is designed to help men who suffer from premature ejaculation
and uses a technique called habituation, i.e. training yourself to control your ejaculation.
The device uses a stop start technique and it appears have demonstrated some success
in its trials.

The study underpinning the presentation has been peer reviewed
and it was found that the device was three times more effective than psychosexual
therapy and it allowed men to last on average 11 times longer. The programme was tested
in two London teaching hospitals and we have no reason to doubt the findings but we
should emphasise that we have not seen the data and we do not know what controls were
put in place. The programme is set for 6 weeks and you can do the exercise in private
or with your partner.

At the current time, The Online Clinic is prepared to prescribe
Priligy (dapoxetine) for helping with premature ejaculation but this treatment is
expensive and it does not provide a permanent solution: men need to continue taking
the medication every time that they have sex. We will take a look at the new product,
which claims to provide a long term solution and if it is as effective as the study
suggests, we will consider making it available to our patients. For the time being,
we continue to recommend Priligy, which has demonstrated a high success rate amongst
our patients.

The latest in premature ejaculation (PE) news reveals positive
results for Zertane, a new premature ejaculation treatment that has just been through
phase III clinical trials. It was tested at both a low dose and at a high dose. Ampio
Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturers, are now eager to get this drug on the market in
Europe and Asia.

The success of the drug is measured on the length of time the
penis can penetrate the vagina before ejaculating. This is described as intravaginal
ejaculatory latency time (IELT). The lower dose lengthened the mean IELT by 4.07 times
the length of time observed at the trials outset. The higher dose increased the mean
IELT by 4.26 fold.

Men in the group whose median IELT was less than 60 seconds
at the baseline experienced even greater benefits from the drug where the IELT increase
was at 5.2 fold on the lower dose and 6.0 fold on the higher dose.

Priligy is the only oral drug that has been approved for the treatment
of premature ejaculation. Considering Zertane appears to be even more effective
than Priligy, the drug stands to do very well in this emerging treatment area.

Men in the group whose median IELT was less than 60 seconds at
the baseline experienced even greater benefits from the drug where the IELT increase
was at 5.2 fold on the lower dose and 6.0 fold on the higher dose.

Priligy is the only oral drug that has been approved for the treatment
of premature ejaculation. Considering Zertane appears to be even more effective
than Priligy, the drug stands to do very well in this emerging treatment area.

has shown that men are deeply reluctant to seek help for the condition, though it
causes them great suffering and can put unbearable strain on their relationships.

Janssen-Cilag, who have developed the first ever pill for the

asked about how premature
ejaculation impacted on their lives and what they thought attitudes were to the
condition.

1 in 3 men said that the condition made them feel angry, ashamed

in turn made them feel guilty. Half also said that they have never discussed the condition
with anyone, even their partners, with some suffering in silence for over 25 years.

Dr. Ian Banks, President of the European Men’s Health Forum,

with Viagra and erectile dysfunction.

has shown that men are deeply reluctant to seek help for the condition, though it
causes them great suffering and can put unbearable strain on their relationships.

Janssen-Cilag, who have developed the first ever pill for the
condition, commissioned the survey, which saw over 4,500 men from 9 European countries
asked about how premature
ejaculation impacted on their lives and what they thought attitudes were to the
condition.

The survey was also supported by various sexual health charities
and support groups for men suffering from erectile dysfunction, including the European
Sexual Health Alliance and the European Men’s Health Forum.

1 in 3 men said that the condition made them feel angry, ashamed
or depressed while half of the men revealed that they felt to blame for it, which
in turn made them feel guilty. Half also said that they have never discussed the condition
with anyone, even their partners, with some suffering in silence for over 25 years.

Dr. Ian Banks, President of the European Men’s Health Forum,
said that the survey clearly revealed that the condition was still a taboo subject,
with the stigma attached to it preventing many men from talking and talking action.

Only 1 in 10 men said they had spoken to a healthcare professional
about the problem, with half of those who had not saying they felt too embarrassed
and 28% saying they did not consider it to be a medical problem.

With premature ejaculation the most common sexual problem reported
by men, the study is a distressing indication how many men endure the condition alone
and unsupported. It is to be devoutly hoped that the development of a medication to
treat the disorder will lead to it being discussed openly and unashamedly, as happened
with Viagra and erectile dysfunction.
