How does Yasmin work?

Yasmin is taken daily and it tricks the body into thinking that ovulation has taken place so no egg will ripen and be produced by the ovaries. The synthetic hormones will also cause the mucus at the neck of the womb to thicken in order to make it more difficult for sperm to pass into the womb from the vagina. Yasmin also changes the quality of the lining of the womb making it difficult for an egg to attach itself there.

Yasmin has been reported to have fewer side effects than other contraceptive pills such as premenstrual tension, weight gain, depression, mood swings, headache and loss of libido but like all contraceptive pills, it has its fans and its detractors. It is important to find a pill that works for you and this is quite often done by trial and error.

How do I take Yasmin?

Yasmin is a monophasic pill and is taken for 21 days before a seven day break when a bleed is experienced. Women are protected by the pill on their pill free week and do not require the use of additional contraceptives.

When should I start taking Yasmin?

You should commence Yasmin contraceptive pill on the first day of your period. You are protected straight away and no other contraceptives are required to avoid pregnancy.

What happens if I miss a pill?

The pill that is missed should be taken immediately and the rest of the packet should be taken as normal. If two or more pills are missed then the pills need to be taken immediately and the rest of the packet taken as normal but barrier contraception will need to be used for the next seven days.

Yasmin Side Effects

As with all medications, Yasmin can produce side effects but not all people will get side effects. We will normally only prescribe Yasmin if you have had it before so patients will know if they experience side effects or not. The most common side effects are: nausea; vomiting; breast tenderness or enlargement; headaches; vaginal thrush; and water retention.
