What is Valtrex?
Valtrex (valaciclovir) is an anti-viral medication that is used to treat infections related to the herpes virus, such as genital herpes, chickenpox and shingles. It stops the herpes virus from reproducing and so infecting even more of the body's cells.
Can I buy Valtrex?

How does Valtrex work?
Valaciclovir is broken down inside the body and soon becomes Aciclovir. The Aciclovir then works to block the action of a viral enzyme, called DNA polymerase. This DNA is important for the herpes virus to thrive, as it allows it to copy its genetic material from RNA to DNA, thus allowing the virus to multiply and survive. When the enzyme is blocked, the virus cannot multiply, allowing the immune system to control it.
How do I take Valtrex?
In cases of genital herpes, Valtrex is taken orally. It is important to drink lots of water while taking Valtrex, as it can increase the chances of becoming dehydrated.
Can Valtrex kill the herpes virus completely?
No. Herpes simplex is a chronic condition, so as yet there is no treatment that will totally rid the body of the virus. However Valtrex can help sufferers control the infection. When someone is suffering from a flare-up, the symptoms of which are painful sores around the genital area, Valtrex can lessen the blisters and help them clear up more quickly.
People who suffer from frequent breakouts of genital herpes may be prescribed Valtrex as a preventative treatment. They will take the medication more regularly to suppress the herpes virus. Doctors may also give patients a course of Valtrex to keep at home, so that if they believe a breakout is imminent they can start the treatment as soon as possible.
Can anyone with herpes take Valtrex?
It is recommended patients with poor kidney or liver function be prescribed this medication with caution. Similarly, pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers should not take this medication without first consulting their GP. There are a few medications with which Valtrex is contraindicated so it is important to make a complete disclosure to your doctor during your consultation.
Does Valtrex have side effects?
As with all medications, there is a possibility of side effects. The most common side effects are headaches, abdominal pains and diarrhoea. There are other potential side effects and we give a full list in our pre-purchase guidance if you are approved for this medication.
