What is Lotriderm?
Lotriderm is a cream made up of two active ingredients, betamethasone diproprionate and clotrimazole. Betamethasone diproprionate is a medicine known as a topical corticosteroid. These medicines are effective in reducing the inflammation that results in swollen, red, itchy skin. Clotrimazole is a medicine belonging to the antifungals. These medicines kill fungi and yeasts on the skin by preventing them from producing a crucial element of their cell membranes; without this element, the fungi and yeasts cannot survive. Skin problems such as ringworm, athlete's foot, and candida may be treated with clotrimazole. Lotriderm therefore treats both the fungal infection and reduces the redness and itchiness of your skin.
How to use Lotriderm
Lotriderm cream is for the skin; use it just as your doctor has explained. Apply a thin, even layer of cream to the areas of affected skin once in the morning and again in the evening. Unless treating your hands, wash your hands after using Lotriderm. Do not cover the area with a plaster or dressing as this enables more of the medicine to penetrate the skin, which could lead to side effects.
Your doctor will tell you how long to use the cream. Usually, this is for two or four weeks, depending on the infection that you have. The medicine should start to work within a few days, but contact your doctor if your skin does not improve. Do not stop using the cream before you have been told, even if it looks better, because the infection may return if you do so.
The cream should not be used for more than 5 days either on the face (particularly avoid your eyes, nostrils and mouth) or in children. It should also not be used where the skin folds, on damaged skin, or on any skin area for long periods of time (such as for many weeks or months).
Contact your doctor should you use Lotriderm cream more often than advised or you have used it for many weeks. If you forget to apply it, then do so as soon as possible and continue as you have been told.
Who can use Lotriderm?
Adults, adolescents and children 12 years or older may use Lotriderm cream. The cream should not be used if you are allergic to its active ingredients or other constituents, or you think you may have developed an allergic reaction, or if your skin becomes itchy. In cases of psoriasis, ensure you have your condition checked regularly as corticosteroids may aggravate this condition.
Tell your doctor if you have any other skin infections - Lotriderm should not be used if you have inflammatory conditions on your face, such as acne rosacea, acne, and dermatitis around the mouth, or nappy rash. You should also tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using this medication.
While Lotriderm cream does not usually react with other medicines, you should let your doctor know what medicines you are taking or have recently taken, including those not on prescription.
Lotriderm Side Effects
Some people may experience stinging or burning, swelling, and skin rash, or get other skin infections. Additional to these effects, other medicines containing the ingredients betamethasone dipropionate or clotrimazole have been known to cause red itchy skin, dry skin, inflammation of the hair follicles, changes in skin pigmentation, red stretch marks, skin thinning, and excessive hair growth.
