What is Uniroid?

Uniroid-HC contains two active medicines, hydrocortisone and cinchocaine hydrochloride. Hydrocortisone is a glucocorticoid that causes a reduction in inflammation, itching, and weepy conditions of the skin around the anus. Cinchocaine hydrochloride is an anaesthetic that alleviates pain, working rapidly and for a long time in the skin area where it is applied.

Uniroid-HC ointment is used mainly in the treatment of external haemorrhoids for the short-term relief of anal itching, but is also used for haemorrhoids that are inside the anus. Uniroid-HC suppositories are used for internal haemorrhoids, and their pain and irritation. They both contain a similar strength of both active ingredients.

How to use Uniroid?

Uniroid-HC can be used as an ointment or suppository. Both preparations of Uniroid-HC contain 5 mg each of hydrocortisone and cinchocaine hydrochloride. They can be used separately or at the same time. The preparation(s) you use will be determined by the doctor. It is usual to use the medicine once in the morning and once in the evening, and after every bowel movement. Do not use occlusive dressings over the treated area because you may become sensitive to the product. This medicine is for short-term use, that being for a maximum of 7 days. If you still need treatment, then see your doctor for advice.

To treat the external haemorrhoids with the ointment, wash and dry the anal area, and then spread a small quantity with a finger without rubbing. For internal haemorrhoids, the nozzle applicator can be used. The ointment-filled nozzle is completely inserted in to the anus and then slowly withdrawn while squeezing the tube. The nozzle must be washed before and after use in warm soapy water. When using the suppositories, the plastic cover must be removed before inserting the suppository as far as you can into the anus. There are unlikely to be any effects if you use too much Uniroid-HC. If you forget, apply Uniroid-HC as soon as you remember, but do not double your dose to make up for a missed dose.

Who can use Uniroid?

This medicine is for adults and children 12 years of age or older; it is only used in younger children if instructed by a doctor. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be avoided, as corticosteroids (this being the hydrocortisone) can cause abnormal growth and development of the baby. You must not use Uniroid-HC if you are hypersensitive to hydrocortisone and cinchocaine hydrochloride, other local anaesthetics, or constituents in the product. Additionally, do not use this medicine if you have tuberculosis, anal thrush, and a viral skin infection including herpes simplex, varicella, and vaccinia.

There have not been any reports of interactions between Uniroid-HC and other medicines, but it is always advisable to let your doctor know what medicines you are taking or plan to take.

Uniroid side effects

People who use this medicine over a long period of time or on many separate occasions may increase their risk of contact sensitisation to the product, particularly to the anaesthetic. Topical corticosteroids may be absorbed into the blood stream and large doses can suppress the action of the adrenal glands.
