What is Opticrom?

Opticrom is used to treat and prevent hayfever symptoms that affect the eyes, such as: itching; redness; and soreness. These eye drops are also effective at alleviating symptoms of more prolonged and serious forms of eye allergy. Opticrom is provided as an eye drop solution which contains an antiallergic drug called sodium cromoglicate. It works by preventing the excessive release of histamine and other naturally occurring chemical substances that are triggered in response to pollens and other particles that cause allergy. Excessive amounts of these chemical substances are responsible for the symptoms of hayfever. By blocking their release, Opticrom is able to prevent the allergic symptoms.

How to use Opticrom?

Always remember to wash your hands before using Opticrom. Undo the cap from the bottle and tilt you head back. Squeeze one or two drops of the solution so that it falls inside the lower eyelid without going directly into the eye. Any excess solution can be removed using a clean tissue. Apply the eye drops exactly the same way to the other eye. Remember to replace the cap after each use. One of the additives in the solution reacts with soft contact lenses, which means that you will not be able to wear these while taking Opticrom.

Other types of contact lens should be removed until at least 15 minutes after applying the solution.

The drops should be applied to each eye four times a day for up to 2 weeks during periods of high pollen count. You should consult your doctor or pharmacist if there is no improvement after the first 2 days. Also check to make sure it is OK to use the drops for more than 2 weeks. A new bottle of Opticrom should be used every 4 weeks. This is to make sure that the solution is sterile.

Who can use Opticrom?

Before using Opticrom it is best to consult your doctor to make sure that you do not have an eye infection that would require a different form of treatment. You should also consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breast feeding to make sure that it is still OK to use this product. You can ask our advice if you have not seen your own doctor. You will not be able to use Opticrom if you are allergic to sodium cromoglicate or to any of the preservatives in the solution.

Opticrom side effects

Some people experience mild burning, stinging or blurred vision for a few minutes after applying the eye drops. If affected in this way you should not drive or operate machinery until your vision has returned to normal. If your eye symptoms get worse you may be developing an allergy to Opticrom. Stop using it and make an appointment to see your doctor.
