How to use Levonelle

Despite being known as the morning after pill, Levonelle can be taken up to 72 hours after intercourse. Levonelle is an emergency contraceptive that is available for women on the basis of need if it is medically appropriate to prescribe.

Levonelle Effectiveness

Levonelle is effective but no emergency contraception is 100% effective. Levonelle can be taken up to 72 hours after intercourse but it is believed to be more effective the sooner it is taken so do not delay. Levonelle will not protect you from pregnancy for the rest of your cycle so you should use barrier contraception to prevent pregnancy - even if you are using hormone based contraception.

Levonelle Side Effects

As with all medications, there can be side effects with Levonelle but it should be emphasised that most people get no side effects whatsoever. The most common side effects noticed are:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Next period may be late or early but the following cycle should be normal
  • Lower abdominal pain.

If you get a severe lower abdominal pain then you should contact a doctor without delay as it could indicate an ectopic pregnancy. This is not a result of Levonelle but it is a warning not to ignore this symptom.

If you vomit within 2 hours of taking Levonelle then there is a high risk that your body will not have absorbed sufficient quantities of the active ingredient and it will be rendered ineffective.

Getting Levonelle Online

We can provide a prescription direct to a local pharmacy for you to collect on the same day as your consultation with us. We can provide an overnight delivery service in certain circumstances, but this is not in your overall best interests and will not be our primary recommendation. We can have your prescription sent to almost any pharmacy, so this does not have to be the local pharmacy that you normally use.
